POSITION: Clerk Temporary, Part Time - Emergency Protection From Abuse Unit
Municipal Court, Criminal Division

SALARY: $20.00 per hour

FILING DEADLINE: This is a continuous posting with no filing deadline. The purpose of this position is to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies within the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania.



REQUIREMENTS:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Some experience in an office environment is preferred.
  3. Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  4. Shall be available to work weekday and weekend shifts as assigned 24/7, 365 days per year including all court holidays, inclement weather, etc. The unit does not close, and applicants shall understand this is not a 9-5 Monday through Friday position. Shift work could include 12 hour shifts when necessary.
  5. Ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  6. Successful completion of criminal background investigation.
  7. Covid-19 Vaccination recommended.


GENERAL DEFINITION:

The Emergency Protection from Abuse (EPFA) unit operates during non-traditional hours for emergency petitions only. The unit is staffed by law-trained masters who, in accordance with the Protection from Abuse Act, conduct ex-parte hearings and review facts to determine if a petition should be granted. The EPFA unit is available to petitioners when many other service agencies are closed and maintains a close collaborative working relationship with the Family Court Division.

This position is temporary in nature, either seasonal or for special projects. Work is generally repetitive and clerical in nature. This is entry level clerical work performed under the supervision of a clerical or administrative supervisor. The work is easily learned and, once learned, can be performed without close supervision. Employees in this class may be required to perform data entry work as needed. This is a part-time, on-call position. Shift availability and start times may vary to meet the needs to the unit. Shall be available to work weekday and weekend shifts as assigned 24/7, 365 days per year including all court holidays, inclement weather, etc. The unit does not close, and applicants shall understand this is not a 9-5 Monday through Friday position. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Sorts and files papers and documents according to existing filing system.
  • Performs routine data entry functions to enter information into or retrieve from court computers.
  • Uses standard office equipment to record, store, retrieve, duplicate or present information.
  • Receives requests for court records from lawyers, court officials and the public.
  • Completes standard forms as instructed.
  • Directs the public to appropriate departments based on simple inquiries.
  • Performs related work as required
  • Answers the telephone and may greet the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, members of the judiciary, court and departmental administrators, and members of the public.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ability to use personal computer and learn applicable software to perform data entry.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish an effective working relationship with coworkers and correspond with the general public in a professional manner.
  • Ability to sort papers and documents and file alphabetically.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the English language both orally and in writing.
